Sycamore Class (Year 1)

Welcome to Sycamore class!

We are both really looking forward to teaching you all this year, we have got so many exciting plans for the year ahead. We are very lucky to have Mrs Wiater, Mrs Clark and Mrs Nuku as part of our Sycamore team too! Mrs Bieda will be teaching Sycamore at the beginning of each week, with Mrs Titchener teaching every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

We will start the year off with our Farm to Food topic, where we learn about moving vehicles, ask questions, test different materials, and not only design, but build our very own moving vehicles! In term 2, we will be learning about the incredible things that Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale did to improve wellbeing and care in hospitals, and of course, on the run up to Christmas we will be rehearsing for our Nativity. After Christmas, in term 3, we will start our Seaside topic where we will learn all about the geography of the seaside. In Term 4 our topic is called Castles and Dragons; during this term we will be learning about the geography of the world and what it was like living in a castle. Wassily Kandinsky is our focus artist in term 5 and we will be learning all about him, his artwork, and even making our own Kandinsky inspired clay plates. In term 6 we will be learning all about the Victorians and we will have our very own Victorian day in school.

As in Willow class, the children are encouraged to read to a grown-up every night, this should then be recorded in your child’s reading record. We would also love to see any home learning children have done at home.

PE kit should be in school at all times, Sycamore class will begin the year by having PE every Thursday and Friday, but this is subject to change.

Seaside models

Sycamore had lots of fun creating these incredible seaside models as part of our geography ‘Seaside’ topic. We used old shoeboxes, added tissue paper, paint, cotton wool and lolly sticks to create the different elements. We were then able to label the features including some human and some physical geographical features. The class worked so hard and showed excellent teamwork and determination.

Bedtime Stories

Willow, Sycamore and Maple classes had a wonderful time at our Bedtime Stories event. The children enjoyed listening to stories in a softly lit room by a roaring fire, took part in a thrilling bear hunt around the school using torches, and finished the evening with hot chocolate and biscuits. A truly magical experience enjoyed by all!

Term 3

Sycamore Class have been working incredibly hard this week. The children have been really stuck in using a range of resources to support their maths learning and build their confidence. In geography, they have been exploring the seaside, learning to identify and sort features of the seaside into human and physical. Finally, in our English lessons, we were incredibly impressed with the adventure stories that were written about a character called Sam who goes on an exciting journey on the deep, blue sea.

Mary Seacole Day

Sycamore Class had a fantastic time celebrating Mary Seacole Day! The children fully embraced the theme, arriving dressed as nurses, doctors, and even in the vibrant colours of the Jamaican flag.

Throughout the day, pupils explored the life and legacy of this inspirational, historic nurse. They took part in a variety of hands- on activities, including making traditional Jamaican rice and peas and creating their own herbal remedies, such as homemade cough syrup using some very interesting ingredients!

The class loved learning more about Mary Seacole’s courage, compassion and pioneering work, and the day was filled with creativity, discovery and lots of smiles. Well done, Sycamore!

DT in Term 1

Wow! What a fantastic Design Technology term we have had in Sycamore! We were set a design brief which was to design and construct a moving vehicle that was colourful and could hold a piece of fruit. During this unit, we learned about Henry Ford, found out about parts of a vehicle, understood how an axle and wheels work together and designed our own vehicles. We had lots of fun measuring wood with a ruler, using the glue gun to construct our models and designing the body of the vehicles. Look at how fantastic our models are!
