'Newtown Primary School is a Community Primary School and we take the "Community" aspect of our title very seriously. Our children, their families and extended families are at the heart of everything we do.'

Phonics

At Newtown Primary School we teach phonics through a scheme called ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ You can find out more about this scheme here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjlPILhk7bQ

Each day children in Key stage 1 are taught phonics in small groups for forty minutes. During this time the children learn and review letter sounds, practice blending sounds to read words and develop their speed of reading for fluency. They also focus on a different text each week, learning new vocabulary, practicing reading with expression and answering questions about the text. The children will also have time to work on their spelling skills too.

With all this going on, it is easy to see how Newtown helps children to become such amazing readers!

Phonic skills are used throughout the whole of the school day when the children need to read or write anything and practice is key with this so, please remember to read at home with and to your child as often as possible. It really does make a difference!
