Newtown Community Primary School
'Newtown Primary School is a Community Primary School and we take the "Community" aspect of our title very seriously. Our children, their families and extended families are at the heart of everything we do.'

Cedar Class (Year 5)

Welcome to Cedar Class!

My name is Mrs Bieda and I am teaching Cedar class this year with the support of our teaching assistant, Mrs Clark.

The children will be faced with many new challenges in Year 5 but if they remember to always think of others and approach challenges with a positive attitude, they will be able to enjoy their learning in a caring and supportive environment.

Key things to remember:

  • PE kit needs to be in school every day.
  • Children are expected to read daily and record this in the back of their learning destination book.
  • Maths homework will be set every Monday and will be linked to what the children have been learning in class. Spellings homework will also be set on a Monday; all homework should be completed by Friday.
  • The learning destination book can also be used for any additional home learning that your child wishes to do.

Mrs Bieda

Shelter Building

Cedar class have had a fantastic start to term 6. They thoroughly enjoyed their day of shelter building, cooking hotdogs and toasting marshmallows to make smores. They worked particularly well in teams to build their shelters and to overcome any design problems!

Antarctica

During term 5, Cedar class learnt about Antarctica and how it is being affected by climate change in order to answer the question “Why do penguins prefer electric cars?” Part of the topic involved carrying out research on penguins, then using the information to write a news report which they presented ‘Live from Antarctica’.

Science

Cedar class have been investigating whether materials are soluble or insoluble. They worked in pairs to test eight materials by adding them to water, then stirring the solution, to check whether particles of the solid dissolved or not. They worked carefully and scientifically, noting that a change in the temperature of the water used could change the result.
